I’m grateful to share that Pollen Peddlers Apiary was recently featured by Spectrum News in a story about how the drought here in North Carolina is affecting honey bees and beekeepers. While I always appreciate the opportunity to talk about our apiary, what matters most to me is that more people are paying attention to what the bees are telling us.
When the weather is dry for long stretches of time, the plants around us feel it. Fewer blooms and less nectar mean the bees have to work harder to find what they need. That can affect how quickly colonies build up, how much food they are able to store, and how strong they are going into the next season. As a beekeeper, that means I have to watch the hives closely, make careful decisions, and support the colonies when nature is not providing enough.
For me, this work has never been just about honey. Honey is a beautiful gift from the hive, but the bigger story is pollination. Bees help support the food we eat, the flowers we enjoy, and the health of the environment around us. When the bees struggle, it is a reminder that everything is connected.
During challenging seasons like this, my first responsibility is always the health and safety of the bees. Sometimes that means combining weaker colonies so they have a better chance of survival. Sometimes it means feeding them when nectar is scarce. Sometimes it simply means slowing down, observing, and listening to what the hive needs.
I’m thankful to Spectrum News for helping share this story and for bringing attention to the challenges honey bees are facing in our area. I’m also thankful for every person who asks questions, plants flowers, avoids pesticides, offers clean water, or takes a moment to care about pollinators. Small actions really do matter.
At Pollen Peddlers, our mission has always been rooted in respect for the bees and the many ways they support life around us. I hope this feature helps more people see just how important these tiny workers truly are.
